With Tanzania set to host the African Cup of Nations (AFCON) in 2027, Dar es Salaam needs to shed its clutter and transform itself into a glittering commercial hub. Dar es Salaam Regional Commissioner Albert Shalamila presented a number of measures aimed at improving the appearance of the city, strengthening security and improving environmental management in preparation for Tanzania to jointly host the African Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2027.

Dar es Salaam, as the commercial capital of the country and a key diplomatic center, must demonstrate cleanliness and order in order to be able to host major international events and attract investments. The Regional Commissioner also called on councillors, district and street leaders, as well as district authorities, to strengthen public safety initiatives and work closely with residents to safeguard peace and stability throughout the region.

The Government will not allow any actions that could undermine public order, in addition, local leaders are responsible for ensuring peace and security in their territories. Referring to messages on social networks about possible demonstrations, he called on the heads of districts and streets to remain vigilant and continue to educate residents about the importance of preserving peace and social harmony.

With regard to environmental management, Chalamila instructed local governments to step up cleaning campaigns, ensure compliance with sanitary standards and curb unauthorized waste disposal. Maintaining cleanliness in the city is necessary not only for the health of the population, but also to protect the country's reputation in the run-up to AFCON 2027.

«Tanzania has been honored to host a major continental tournament. Therefore, it is important that our cities meet the standards expected from an international host country», he said.

The Regional Commissioner set July 30 as the deadline for the start of the implementation of the public-private partnership mechanism for the management of the Pugu Kinyamwezi landfill. He called on all city councils to set up proper waste disposal facilities and expand public awareness programs on waste separation and recycling.

Earlier, the Administrative Secretary of the Dar es Salaam region, Abdul Mkhinte, stressed the importance of effective use of the residential address system, noting that it plays a crucial role in identifying residents and improving security. He noted that an accurate targeting system would help authorities improve the provision of services, strengthen public safety, and support broader efforts to maintain peace and order throughout the region.

Thus, the preparation of Dar es Salaam for AFCON 2027 goes far beyond a sporting event and becomes an important stage in the development of the city. Cleanliness, order, safety and effective waste management should form a modern image of the capital, worthy of the status of an international center. The implementation of the planned measures will require close cooperation between the authorities, businesses and residents, but it is this approach that will not only successfully host the tournament, but also lay the foundation for a long-term improvement in the quality of life in the region.
